BBC Sports Personality of the Year: Results
What an incredible year for sporting achievement!
Team GB finishing second in the medal table at the Olympics in Rio this summer and this week the BBC sports personality of the year recognised the individual and team achievements of the year.
Sports Personality of the year 2016 was won by Andy Murray. During 2016 Andy has won Wimbledon for a second time. He then went on to retain his Olympic singles Gold Medal at Rio Olympics and finally in November replaced Novak Djokovic as the world number one. This is the third time, a record in itself that Andy Murray has been recognised as sports personality of the year.
Second place went to Alistair Brownlee – Triathlon – In 2016 retained his Gold medal at the Rio Olympics. His brother and fellow triathlete Jonny came 2nd for a Silver Olympic medal. Alistair then took part in the World Series and, in one of the greatest sporting moments of all time, carried his exhausted brother Jonny Brownlee over finish line and gave Jonny 2nd place and took 3rd place for himself.
In 3rd place was Nick Skelton – Show Jumping – 16 years ago broke his back in a horse riding accident and retired from Show Jumping. One of the greatest come backs to win an individual gold medal at the Rio Olympics on his horse named Big Star. Nick Skelton is Britain’s second oldest Olympic gold medallist at the age of 58 years old.
Life time Achievement Award – Michael Phelps – Swimming – has taken part in 5 Olympic Games. This year, in Rio, he won his 23rd Olympic Gold medal. He also has 3 Silver Olympic medals and 2 Bronze Olympic medals bringing his total to 28 Olympic medals.
Young Sports Personalist of the Year 2016 was won by Ellie Robinson for swimming. Ellie won the S6 50m butterfly in record time at Rio Paralympics 2016. Ellie also won a bronze medal at Rio with a new British record in the 100m freestyle final.
Coach of the Year – Football – Leicester City Manager, Claudio Ranieri, coached Leicester City to win the Premier League for the 2015-2016 season. Ranieri took over at coach during the summer an assembled the Leicester City team for lesson than £30 million and then proceeded to lead the 5000-1 outsiders to win the Premier League.
The Unsung Hero of the Year award was given to boxing Coach Marcuellus Baz. Baz is the founder of the Nottingham School of Boxing which provides free boxing coaching for children and young people.
The Helen Rollason award was given to Ben Smith who ran 10,512 miles in 401 days to raise awareness of Mental Health Issues after suffering depression himself from previously being bullied. During that time he ran 401 marathons, used 27 pairs of trainers and burned 2996500 calories.
Overseas Sports Personality of the year award – Gymnastics – Simone Biles – Simone won 4 Gold Medals and a Bronze medal at Rio 2016 Olympics to add to her 10 world championship gold medals. She has won more medals than any other women in history with a total of 14 medals, at the age of 19 years old.
Team of the year was won by Leicester City Football Club. During the 2015-2016 season Leicester City lost only 3 league games and went on to win the Premier league coached by Claudio Ranieri after only just missing out on relegation the previous year.
